Yoga Classes + Workshops
The community that's created at Daughter of Samoa is part indescribable while also being unparalleled. Birthworker Leonora is welcoming to all, students who understand the importance of being in movement during their pregnancy and after they have their babies, people who wish to appreciate this special and fleeting time with themselves, their babies and supporters. Leonora has a keen ability to see and understand bodies, even the little bodies within the bodies! But also, she has the experience to know how to aid people in feeling better after just one class. And feeling better physically leads to people feeling more embodied and confident within themselves. A regular practice of Yoga with its central tenet to know oneself as a path to liberation is in perfect alignment for this rite of passage of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum time period.
Yoga also helps to provide a counter to the sedentary lives we live, sitting in chairs for hours on end, or in feeding a baby in restrictive and repetitive positions for much of the day and night so that the aches and pains that the body feels going through this major transition can be tended to compassionately, in an embodied way. Research also shows that Prenatal Yoga helps to increase the vaginal delivery rate, decrease the premature delivery rate and Yoga even takes a role in shortening the first stage and second stage of labor. Moreover, Yoga can help keep a body in balance within the body, the uterus and the entirety of the pelvis into the ribs as well, including the glutes and whole back body, thus decreasing the chances of a baby that is breech or not in an easy and optimal position for labor and birth. Perinatal Yoga promotes relaxation and helps with stress management, improves stamina and emotional well being. It increases strength, flexibility and agility, all things we need as soon-to-be and current parents. Moreover, in prenatal Yoga, the deep toning of the birth muscles can aid in reducing incontinence, prolapse and strengthen muscles like the transverse abdominis and the muscular walls of the uterus and the pelvic floor. Overall circulation is increased which is healing for all bodies. But mostly, Yoga can help a practitioner feel empowered.
